F3T
PRIVATE WORKS · EST. MMXXVI

Applied research in land, energy and systems.

F3T operates a working property as a test bed for the question of whether contemporary technology can be made to increase a household's independence rather than reduce it. The work is measured, documented and kept.

01 — LINES OF WORK

Four systems, one household

Each line is run as an experiment with a defined failure mode: if it cannot be maintained on site, it does not stay.

L-01

Water

Well, storage and gravity distribution sized to run three days with no power at all. Filtration and quality logged weekly.
9.0GPM SUSTAINED, TESTED MAR
L-02

Power

Generation, storage and load shedding run as one system. Every circuit is ranked by what happens when it is the last one left.

L-03

Cultivation

Soil, rotation and yield recorded per plot. Sensing is used to decide what to stop doing as often as what to start.

L-04

Records

Documents, readings and correspondence kept in formats readable without us — plain text, paper, and a local store.

02 — METHOD

Nothing is adopted before it is tested.

Work proceeds in seasons. Each season closes with a written assessment held on site, against the previous season's figures.

01

State the failure mode first

Before a system is installed we write down how it fails, who repairs it, and what the household does in the interval. If that page cannot be written, the system is not ready.
02

Measure before and after

Each intervention is bracketed by a season of figures on either side. Improvements that cannot be shown in the log are treated as preferences, not results.
03

Prefer the repairable

Between two systems of equal performance we take the one that can be maintained with tools and parts already on site.
04

Keep the record readable

Findings are written for a reader forty years out who has none of our software and none of our assumptions.
03 — INSTRUMENTATION

The property reports on itself

Sensing, logging and storage are held on site. Nothing essential depends on a service that can be withdrawn.
